Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy met Goethe for the first time when he was 12 years old. Between the then old man and the young musician there sprung up a sincere and loving friendship.
Felix visited his illustrious friend for several weeks at a time, and hour by hour he played to him while the old man listened enraptured to his music. Mendelssohn, Goethe, and the Walpurgis Night addresses tolerance and acceptance in the face of cultural, political, and religious strife.
Its point of departure is the Walpurgis Night. The Night, also known as Beltane or May Eve, was supposedly an annual witches' Sabbath that centered around the Brocken, the highest peak of the Harz Mountains.
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (/ ˈ ɡ ɜː t ə /, also US: / ˈ ɡ ɜːr t ə, ˈ ɡ eɪ t ə,-t i / GURT-ə, GAYT-ə, -ee; German: [ˈjoːhan ˈvɔlfɡaŋ fɔn ˈɡøːtə] (); 28 August – 22 March ) was a German writer and statesman.
